Choose subjects and use a variety of techniques to enhance writing, including research and reflection about books for children. Explore the challenges related to the beginning, middle, and end of stories, and focus on the craft of revising. Published writers of children's books discuss a variety of genres, how they research their subjects, and how they revise. Storytelling Through Pictures Tuesdays, Jan. 8–Mar. 11, 2008 6:30-9:30 p.m. Seattle, WA Instructor Rollin Thomas helps students learn how to make sequential pictures tell a story. Explore the effectiveness of storyboards and dummies to refine narratives. Develop scenes and heighten the drama with color, texture, pattern, and perspective. Several art markets will be discussed. Topics will include story-boarding for film and animation, mural art, and other publishing genres of fantasy, sci-fi, gothic, and graphic novel arts. Learn how to add authenticity to ethnic and historical art with a variety of research tools, and gain more confidence in storytelling style. The Disciplined Artist Wednesdays, Jan. 23–Feb. 27, 2008 4:00-6:00 p.m. Seattle, WA How many unfinished stories do YOU have in the drawer? Are you ready to see a project through to the end, even if you don't yet know how to do it? At Richard Hugo House, instructor Cheryl Slean will offer insights to help move your writing—and your piece—to the next level. Through readings and exercises, we'll experiment with selection and sequencing of material to find beginnings, middles, and ends. Online Manuscript Workshop for Children's Writers 10 weeks beginning January 28, 2008 This ongoing writers workshop is open to intermediate and advanced writers who are working on manuscripts, from picture books to YA novels, and who need the structure of a class to retain their focus and energy. Unlike the introductory class, the advanced workshop will not offer weekly exercises or lectures, but will focus entirely on participants' own works-in-progress. Cost: $270. First Steps: Introduction to Writing for Children 8 weeks beginning February 11, 2008 This is a beginner's class, not a critiquing class or a workshop, where participants discuss the variety of forms within the genre and learn the basics needed to write for young readers. Participants will receive a lecture and exercises each week that will either spark new work or relate to existing work-in-progress. Homework assignments will be shared with the whole group for in-class discussion and instructor comment. The course includes required reading and analysis of selected children's books. Cost: $220.
