Frequently Asked Questions About Inside Story

What is THE INSIDE STORY?
The Inside Story is a twice-yearly salon at which we celebrate the new books of area authors and illustrators. The event kicked off on October 4, 1998, under the leadership of Laura McGee Kvasnosky and George Shannon, children’s book creators. The original idea was to bring booksellers and book creators together, giving the sellers a behind-the-scenes look at the books we create and giving book creators the chance to get to know the wonderful and supportive local independent bookstores.

After several years of loyal leadership, Laura and George were ready to turn over the reins. They approached SCBWI Western Washington about sponsorship, and the rest, as they say, is history.

When is the Inside Story held?
There is a fall event and a spring event. Dates are announced at monthly meetings, on the website, in the on-line update and in the Chinook.

Where is it held?
Hosting responsibilities rotate between interested, local independent bookstores with enough space to accommodate the event.

How many presenters are there at each event?
It varies, but generally, we have found that 12-15 presenters, speaking for 3 minutes each, make for a perfect evening. That number may be adjusted depending on circumstances.

Am I eligible to present?
You are eligible to participate as a presenter if:
- You are an SCBWI member or have signed up for SCBWI Western Washington's current regional programming;
- Your publisher is on SCBWI’s lists of recognized (traditional) publishers;
- Your book is released within four months before or three months after the event; AND
- Your book is readily available through normal trade channels (e.g., Baker & Taylor).

Presenter slots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

My book is just out in a new, paperback edition; may I apply to present it?
Congratulations on getting your book in paperback! However, in order to accommodate all new books, we cannot include new editions of already published books, books only available through book clubs, and/or self-published books without ISBN numbers. Books must be for children or teens.

How do I apply?
Several months before each Inside Story, application forms are available in The Chinook and on the SCBWI Western Washington Website.

Who is invited to Inside Story?
Over 300 invitations are sent to area media folks, booksellers, librarians and teachers who now eagerly await the event. It not only gives them the chance to learn about new books and their creators, it also is a way for them to scope out possible presenters for their stores, libraries and schools. Anyone is welcome to attend, but only the above-mentioned will receive an invitation.

What will my responsibilities be as a presenter?
First and foremost, to come and be our honored guest. We are firmly committed to celebrating your good news! Once your application is accepted you will receive an email with detailed information concerning your presenter responsibilities.

Here are some other responsibilities:

  • Prepare a 2-3 minute talk about your book. These evening showcases give booksellers the background to hand sell our books -- along with curriculum connections and behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Such juicy details add up to help the bookseller (and teacher and librarian) put the author and/or illustrator in the book.

  • The Inside Story is not a story time; please don’t read your book. Instead, share with the audience how you came to write it or any other wonderful anecdote connected with its creation. For example, Lensey Namioka brought an exquisitely tiny pair of shoes – to be worn by an adult woman – to show what led to her novel about foot-binding, Ties That Bind, Ties That Break. Marcia Vaughn confessed that channel surfing planted the seed for two of her books, including The Freedom Quilt. Presentation counts! Many teachers and librarians are looking to book authors and illustrators for school visits and use the Inside Story as a screening tool. WARNING: To make sure every presenter has equal opportunity to speak, presentations are timed. This means you should practice and rehearse your presentation to make certain it fits within the specified time frame.

  • Bring a copy of your book for the Great Book Give-away. During the course of the evening, we play a trivia game about children’s books. Audience members answering correctly win one of the evening’s featured books. Your publisher is generally very happy to provide a copy for this event.

  • Bring materials for the "freebie" table. Postcards, brochures, bios – a table is set up specifically for these wonderful handouts.

  • Bring your favorite booksigning pen. Booksales/signings immediately follow the presentations.
